Radu al României Duda, formerly known as ‘Radu Hohenzollern Veringen Duda’, was born on 7 June 1960 in Iasi, Romania, as Radu Duda. In 1996 he married Princess Margarita of Romania. On 1 January 1999 he was given the name, not title of “Prince of Hohenzollern-Veringen” by Friedrich Wilhelm, Prince of Hohenzollern, the Head of the Sigmaringen branch of the Hohenzollern family, After that he called himself Radu Hohenzollern Veringen Duda Since 2007, when he had his legal name changed into “Radu al României Duda,” Radu no longer uses the name of Hohenzollern

The new Statute of the Romanian Royal Family signed by ex-King Michael I of Romania on December 30, 2007, made public Radu’s title of “Prince of Romania” with the style of “Royal Highness,” which King Michael had bestowed upon him earlier on January 5, 2005

These arrangements are vested only in the document mentioned above. They have no legal or diplomatic consequences. The last Royal Romanian constitution does not endorse the succession of daughters, nor does it make provisions for titles for their husbands.

Either in the company of his wife Princess Margarita or most often alone, mr. Radu al României Duda represents the Royal Family on various occasions.

He graduated from the University of Drama and Film in Bucharest, 1984 and had over 20 years of artistic activity in Romania as well as in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. He was the Artistic Director of the first project in Romania of art therapy for abandoned children in orphanages. The project, started in 1993, was developed in eight cities over six years.

Mr. al României Duda played a major role in the planning and organisation of the official tours undertaken by King Michael I of Romania in 1997 and 2002 for the integration of Romania in NATO, as well as creating the concept of the King’s “Millennium Tour” in Romania in 2000. In the NATO tours the King visited the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg and The Netherlands, meeting with heads of state and government. He accompanied the King on most of these visits.

In 2002, he graduated from the National College of Defence of Romania, and the George C. Marshall College, Garmisch, Germany. In August 2004 he participated in the two-week Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security at John F. Kennedy School of Government Harvard University.

In September 2002, he was appointed Special Representative of the Romanian Government for Integration, Co-operation and Sustainable Development. He is also Advisor to HM King Michael I, Patron of the British-Romanian Chamber of Commerce, Member of the Board of Directors of “House of NATO” Association in Bucharest, and Honorary Member of the Senate of “Aurel Vlaicu” University of Aradand of the University ofOradea, Romania.

Since 2005, he is a Romanian Army Coloneland holds a doctorate in Military Science from the National Defence University ofBucharest.

Mr. al României Duda’s lectures address topics related to Romania’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures, defense, and security, geopolitics and diplomacy, culture, economics, and education. He has equally spoken out about the issue of ethnic minorities, in particular about the Roma (Gypsy or Tzigane) minority, an important issue for Romania and South Eastern Europe today, through conferences in Romania and around Europe, in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, etc. His activity report “2005 Annual Report and 2002-2004 Retrospective” is available in English and Romanian on his official website.

Personality

In an interview for “Observator Plus,” Radu al României Duda talks frankly about himself. He says that during Communism he had lived in an amoral world (similar to present-day Romania) which lacked models and in which it was difficult to have principles. He discovered the latter only when he met King Michael, when he realized that “life can be marked, here and there, by principles.” Before that fateful meeting, Radu had had only ideals and “exercises of admiration” towards European or international personalities. In another interview[31], Radu enumerates some of the personalities from Eastern Europe he admires, such as Pope John Paul II, Lech Wałęsa, Václav Havel, and Nelson Mandela. During Communism, his family represented a source of inspiration for him, because in those corrupt times, not unlike current times in Romania, they remained honest people. Also, Radu believes that he could not have done things better than he has done in his life so far. He also says that he has very few friends. One of his favorite films is Brokeback Mountain,which he describes as “one of the most moving and emotional, full of inspiration and of truth movies of the last years,” and he is an admirer of the movie’s “exceptional” star, Heath Ledger, whose premature death he decries. His favorite singers are Pavarotti, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Elton John.

Nascut Radu Duda la 7 iunie 1960, la Iasi, intr-o familie de medici. A absolvit Liceul Internat din Iasi in anul 1979 si Institutul de Arta Teatrala si Cinematografica din Bucuresti in anul 1984.

Intalnirea cu Alteta Sa Regala Principesa Margareta este, asa cum avea sa marturiseasca ulterior, un moment decisiv in viata sa. Acest lucru s-a petrecut in 1994, cand activitatea sociala a Principesei, ca presedinte al Fundatiei Principesa Margareta a Romaniei, s-a intersectat cu primul demers de terapie prin arta din Romania, “Artécole”, condus de actorul si asistentul universitar Radu Duda. Ambele initiative s-au adresat copiilor din orfelinatele din Bucuresti si din tara.

In 1996 se casatoreste cu Alteta Sa Regala Principesa Margareta a Romaniei. In 1999 este numit Principe de Hohenzollern-Veringen. Acest moment va marca sfarsitul carierei artistice din teatru, film si televiziune, inceputa in 1974. In anul 2005 este numit Principe al Romanei si Alteta Regala.

Principele Radu a inceput cariera militara in 2002 cand, dupa absolvirea Colegiului National de Aparare din Bucuresti, a devenit capitan in rezerva in Armata Romaniei. Este, de asemenea, absolvent al Colegiului George C. Marshall din Germania (2003) si al programului “Senior Executives in National and International Security”, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Universitatea Harvard (2004).

Astazi, Principele Radu este colonel (r) in Armata Romaniei si doctor in stiinte militare. La Universitatea Nationala de Aparare a sustinut in martie 2006 teza de doctorat cu titlul ”Securitatea europeana in evolutie, in noul context al democratiei si libertatii pe continent”.

Principele este consilier al Majestatii Sale Regelui Mihai si a detinut calitatea de demnitar al Statului roman, ca Reprezentant Special al Guvernului Romaniei, din anul 2002 pana in anul 2008. Biroul Reprezentantului Special a fost o idee noua in spatiul romanesc, menita sa aplice in practica trei dintre caracteristicile fundamentale ale regalitatii: traditia, continuitatea si identitatea nationala.

Din aceasta pozitie, angajamentele publice ale Altetei Sale Regale in slujba intereselor pe termen lung ale Romaniei au fost, in cei sapte ani, in numar de peste 4.000.

Din 1997 pana in 2002, Principele Radu a jucat un rol important in conceperea, planificarea si organizarea vizitelor oficiale ale Regelui Mihai, in vederea sustinerii integrarii Romaniei in NATO si UE, in tari precum Marea Britanie, SUA, Franta, Belgia, Spania, Luxemburg, Olanda, Norvegia, Suedia si Danemarca.

In cadrul numeroaselor vizite in tara, Alteta Sa Regala a initiat proiecte de dezvoltare a Romaniei locale. Proiectele ”Orasele Romaniei” si ”Initiativa Europa regiunilor” construiesc actiuni de cooperare intre comunitatile locale romanesti si diverse comunitati din regiuni europene. Este autorul conceptului Turneul Mileniului, pe care Majestatea Sa Regele l-a facut in tara, in anul 2000. Scopul acestor vizite l-a constituit coeziunea societatii romanesti prin afirmarea identitatii nationale. A initiat in anul 2006 Turneul Prieteniei, pentru cunoașterea Romaniei in mediile locale din SUA.

Din 1999, Principele a sustinut peste 250 de conferinte despre Romania in tara, ca si in Austria, Azerbaidjan, Belgia, Canada, Croatia, Egipt, Elvetia, Emiratele Arabe Unite, Estonia, Finlanda, Franta, Georgia, Germania, India, Iordania, Irlanda, Italia, Japonia, Letonia, Lituania, Marea Britanie, Maroc, Moldova, Olanda, Polonia, Senegal, Slovacia, Slovenia, Statele Unite, Suedia, Thailanda,Turcia, Ungaria.

Pe 9 aprilie 2009, Alteta Sa Regala si-a anuntat intrarea in cursa electorala, devenind primul candidat la alegerile prezidentiale din toamna acestui an, cu statul de independent.
